If Your Happy and You Know It Clap Your Hands

"If You're Happy and You Know It" is a popular repetitive children's and drinking song. The song has been noted for its similarities to "Molodejnaya", a vocal appearing in the 1938 Soviet musical film Volga-Volga.^[1]

The origin of the melody is not known, just numerous sources trace it back to Spain, Latin America, Latvia or the United States of America.

The song was published in various places through the decades post-obit the late 1960s, including a volume of "effective recreational activities" for children (1957),^[2] a volume of drama projects for disabled children (1967),^[iii] and a nursing home manual (1966).^[iv]

In 1971, Jonico Music filed for copyright on the song, crediting information technology to Joe Raposo.^[v]

During the early function of the 2000s, the music Recording Industry Clan of America actively prosecuted individuals for downloading music using file-sharing services. Widespread media attention was paid to one 12-year-old, whose downloads included "If You lot're Happy and You lot Know It" from Kazaa.^{[6] [7] [viii] [9]}

In 2007, the vocal was included as part of the Japan no Uta Hyakusen, a listing of the 100 almost well-known folk songs in Japan. It is ane of nine songs from foreign countries included on the list. It was selected by the Agency of Cultural Affairs and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers Associations of Nippon.

In 2020, Granger Smith recorded a version that relied on booze drinking called "Country and Ya Know It".^[10]

Lyric variations [edit]

Like many children's songs, at that place are many versions of the lyrics. A popular version goes like this:

If you lot're happy and you know it, clap your hands!
If you lot're happy and you know it, clap your easily!
If you're happy and you know information technology, then your face will surely prove information technology;
If yous're happy and you know it, clap your easily!

This verse is usually followed by iii more than, four more, etc. which follow the same pattern but say: "If you're happy and you know it, stomp/stamp your feet!", "If yous're happy and you know it, shout/say 'hooray'!" or "shout/say 'amen'!", "If y'all're happy and you know it, exercise all three!" and "If you're happy and you know it, do all four!". Other versions of the song tend to say "then your face up will surely show it" in place of "and you lot really desire to evidence it"; the form "then you really ought to evidence it" has also been used. Many variations on the substance of the first three verses exist, including:^[11]

"... shout/say, 'Hooray'!"

"... slap your knees!"

"... slap your legs!"

"... turn effectually!"

"... snap your fingers!"

"... nod your caput!"

"... tap your toe!"

"... honk your olfactory organ!"

"... pat your head!"

There is a notable variation from the 5th measure (including selection-upwardly note) to the 6th measure out, attested in Japan.
